3 finishes at Pembrey! 2

Well that was a busy weekend!  Last weekend saw the Super Silhouette championship and the Loram Racing team travelling to the Pembrey circuit in Wales for rounds 3, 4 and 5 of this years championship.  With our coolant leak fixed and no other issues present after the first meeting of the season at Brands, we were hopeful of a trouble free meeting as Brian would have to learn the circuit.  We did thankfully (and rarely) have a practice session on Saturday morning which was most welcome, although things weren’t looking great in our orange gazebo after practice as Brian didn’t feel comfortable out on track.  Just as well we weren’t straight into qualifying this week like normal!

After a few hours out of the car and a pep talk from Lee and the amazing Ayrton (who we have to thank for standing in as crew cheif this weekend as Ross was sunning himself in Cyprus), Brian was back out in qualifying to give it another go.  After being some way off the back of the pack in practice, qualifying went much better with Brian knocking 4 seconds off his time to set a 1:11.036 which was much more in the mix and would line him up 16th of the 17 cars.  Malcolm Blackman set the fastest time, narrowly ahead of Chris Brockhurst with Steve Burrows third.  The top 8 would be reversed on the grid for race 1 however.

Late Saturday afternoon and the cars were out on circuit again for race 1 of the weekend which proved to be a real race of attrition with only 11 cars finishing after a number of dramas, fortunately we weren’t involved in any of them as Brian continued to get more comfortable with the track and bring the car home for the first finish of the season.  Up at the front of the field, the fastest 3 qualifiers made it through to fill the podium by the end of the race, Blackman from Brockhurst and Burrows.

After a pleasant evening and a good nights sleep at the track, we were ready for another 2 races on Sunday, we’ve never done so much mileage in one weekend!  Overnight we’d fitted the gurney flap to the rear wing and this transformed the car.  Brians best lap in race 2 was a massive 2 seconds faster than qualifying, a 1:09.045 as he again finished, this time in 9th place ahead of John Steward as the race was red flagged slightly early after a scary fire for Hunn from which he thankfully escaped unharmed.  Malcolm Blackman again took the win in this one from Steve Burrows and Danny Hunn.  You can watch race two on Youtube here.

If only that kerb was a bit wider! (Thanks to Graham Holbon Photography)

The final race of the weekend was definitely the best for us as after a steady start Brian really got into it and went charging past a few cars before catching up with Ricky Hunn.  He spent several laps crawling all over Hunns Mazda but couldn’t find a way past which unfortunately let the cars behind catch up again and then squeeze past as Brian thought our fuel starvation problem from Brands had come back to haunt us again.  Luckily though it hadn’t and despite losing some time and a few places it was at least another finish to end a weekend of perfect reliability for us!  Reasons to be cheerful and some points on the board!  Malcolm Blackman completed his clean sweep of wins this weekend as he looks set for another championship while Steve Burrows again took second with Keith White third, narrowly ahead of Mark Sear who was going well in fourth.  You can watch race 3 on Youtube here.

So close! (Thanks to Graham Holbon Photography)

That’s it for this weekend then, we’re next out at Brands Hatch on June 1st and 2nd for the American Speedfest meeting, see you there, it’s going to be huge!

Happy racing everyone 🙂
