Rockingham. The second meeting of the 2015 Avon Intermarque Championship, and the second meeting in succession in which we’ve been haunted by a strange fuel starvation / engine dying on it’s ass during left handers problem. Still, after a problem free second race (crash excluded) at Snetterton last time out, we headed out for qualifying at Rockingham under the impression that all was well with the car. Once out on circuit though and the strange problem we first encountered at Snetterton was back in abundance, every time Ross so much as showed the car a left hander it lost all power. Frustrating, and particularly annoying at an anti-clockwise circuit at Rockingham with left handers in abundance!
On the more positive front, the car seemed to be performing reasonably well when it was running cleanly and somehow #26 posted the 6th fastest time of the session, which became 4th on the grid after Malcolm Blackman and Tommy Field received penalties for overtaking under yellow flags. Back in the pits and the team began looking for the problem, but as before everything seemed fine and the car was running absolutely fine. Fresh out of ideas we crossed our fingers and lined up for race 1. Despite everything feeling okay on the warm-up lap, Ross was in trouble as soon as the race began with the engine just not pulling cleanly, even on the straights. As a result of this he’d lost a whole fist full of places by the first hairpin and continued to lose more throughout the first lap, finally dropping to stone dead last as he outbraked himself, the car, and the circuit at the hairpin and disappeared down the escape road.

After re-joining (car now behaving) and clawing a couple places back over the next two laps, the engine again started sounding a bit sick which spelt the end for race one.

With Ross and the car not on speaking terms after race one, Brian and Paul set to work trying anything that might cure the problem, i.e – anything to do with the wiring or fuel system. Long story short, same problem in race 2 and a retirement on lap 1.

So that’s that then, it’s been a frustrating start to the season, but you can’t have good days if you don’t have bad ones! Looking at the results it seems fairly feasible that we could have been top 4 in all the races so far too, which is pleasing…..and irritating….but mostly pleasing.
Nevermind, we have crisps and chocolate!
Since Rockingham the car has of course received some attention, and parts. No way we’re messing another meeting up, especially as next up is the American Speedfest at Brands Hatch on 7th June. Let’s get this season going!
