Bank holiday Monday and typical bank holiday weather as we made our way to the season finale at Mendips in pouring rain and fog! Thankfully there was no repeat of the last meeting and the weather soon improved, although not before we’d all had our wits tested sliding around on slicks in a damp practice session. With this being the West of England Championship meeting we only found out when arriving that there would be no points on offer, thus making us the 2009 Points Champions! Woohoo! What a good start to the day! 🙂
Lining up for practice
With the track fully dry for race 1 Ross got lucky and drew pole position. Opening up a lead from the start #26 remained out front to take the opening win of what was rapidly becoming a very good day!
Race 2 and with the grid reversed #26 started from 12th place but soon picked up places and had just made it past the #89 Tigra and into 7th before it spun on the top corner to bring out the yellow flags. From the restart Ross was faced with the job of passing Shelper who was already very busy trying to pass Tossell’s very wide Saxo.
As the two touched into the top corner a gap opened up for Ross to move into 6th but with only a few laps left that’s as far as he was going to get in this one. In fact the worst thing about this race was returning to the pits and finding our gazebo had attempted to take off before bending in half and landing back on the trailer, ace 😉
With the highest points scorers off the front for the final it was Wilson Hamilton on pole with Ross in 2nd, just missing out on pole by a few points. Hamilton led from the off with Ross close in his wheel tracks as they pulled away from the field and soon began encountering backmarkers. It didn’t look like #26 had the pace to get past #904 on an empty track so an opportunistic move through the lapped cars seemed to be the only way past. Ross was certainly living up to his ‘win it or bin it’ approach to the meeting as he went three wide round the outside of Saunders as Hamilton undertook him, for a moment it looked like #26 had got round the outside just in time to pin #904 behind the next lapped car but not quite.
With a gap opening slightly as Ross cleared the last of the group of backmarkers it was another 5 lap sprint in clear track until the leading pair caught the next group of cars…more slightly ambitious lapping but still no way past the blue Tigra out front! Into the final lap and #904 ran wide in the bottom corner trying to put a lap on #205, #26 was there to stick a nose up the inside as they came out of the corner and up the hill but #904 just had the momentum to get clear and dive back inside into the last corner.
That was that then, a bump into the last corner but #904 had the line and the West of England Championship, Ross having to be content with second but having enjoyed a great race and a very pleasing end of the season with some good pace and the car working very well. Bring on 2010!
With Ross’ season at Mendips now finished the car will be going back to Brian who is eager to get back racing (Ross thinks he just wants to make sure he hasn’t buggered his car up too much!) and will be in action at Buxton on September 27th. All that’s left to do before then is to change the seat, diff and add a number 2 to the doors! See you next time…
