The seventh and final world qualifying round of 2005 has taken place at Birmingham Wheels where the Loram Racing team certainly had a meeting to forget.
After practice it was straight into race 1 where Brian would be starting way down in 14th place. Things looked good from the start as the #262 car moved forward and was up into 11th place and up behind the 3 cars fighting for 8th but it was plain to see from the outside that the cars handling was going away.
As the race went on the car was starting to get very loose entering the corners and as a result Brian spun not long later, a real shame as during the first few laps the car had looked really on the pace and had been moving forwards. With the long gap between races the team took the oppurtunity to make a number of changes to the car before the second race.
Race 2 – Into race 2 and with the reverse grid format #262 was starting from much nearer the front this time. Things again looked okay for the first few laps as Brian ran inside the top 10 until lap 10 when an incident with the #844 car of Billy Bonner simply ripped off the front of the #262 car, it seems the cars had somehow got connected as #844 had moved over on the straight. Attempting to free them Brian dabbed the brakes, unfortunatly the front bumper, grill and fronts of the wings ripped clean off.
With no other damage though Brian was able to continue but with a number of places now lost could only manage 17th place at the flag.
With the combination of damage and still persistent handling problems (which had now been narrowed down to the brakes) it was decided it would be best to load up and not race in the final. With this being the last meeting of 2005 the team now have several months to try some different braking options and test them before the season continues next year.
We’ll be back!
